Have you ever wondered why God would call you to the life you live? Or doubt that the work you do could be the best thing for God’s kingdom? I find myself wondering frequently why God isn’t calling me to move to the other side of the world to serve the impoverished or the many who have never heard the gospel. As a professional dancer, I spend hours working on my own craft and my own physical abilities. How could my work as a dancer truly be the best way to further the kingdom here on earth?
In her article titled, Your vocation doesn’t have to be saving the world, Teresa Coda reminded me of our broken, desperate entire world and how by simply living we can have a greater impact on others than I realized.
She says, “The Earth needs people to tirelessly work on her, to make her a better, more habitable place in the broadest of senses. And so too do each of the people in the world need the gentle, competent care of their fellow humans.”
Perhaps, your brief interaction with your neighbor or the place you are called to each day is where you might, unknowingly, bring light and meaning into a dark life. The Lord is sovereign over all things and holds the world’s suffering in addition to each of ours in his hands. I am striving to trust him in wherever he calls me to be.
However, perhaps you are called to missions across the world. Whatever or wherever you are called, with an open mind, we can trust the Lord and his ability to work in any life and circumstance.
